I recently learned about a device called a Smart Meter. As I make it my top notch priority every day to share with our readers the various ways they can lower their body burdens– stay safe and healthy from the inside out- I thought I would share with you what these devices are and why I don’t like them.
Smart meters are wireless radiation devices which measure energy usage in homes. The meters tell the power companies how much energy is being used and when it is being used. While this can help us regulate our energy usage (i.e. remind us to lower heat when no one is home), there are several very serious problems that go along with a smart meter:
1- Wireless Radiation:”smart meters” emit constant pulsed radio frequency (RF) radiation, classified by the World Health Organization as a Class 2B carcinogen. RF radiation is a type of energy that consists of electric and magnetic energy. This type of energy has been powering the world (TV and radio broadcasts, microwave ovens, sonar, radar, industrial heaters, air traffic navigation and more) and now it adds to its abilities the power to run wireless communication. Everything in our life that deals with wireless technology is run on RF radiation. When I think about my home and office and the kids’ school, that means that we are surrounded by wireless RF radiation ALL day long: modems, routers, bluetooth, cell phones, computers, even cordless phones work on this energy spectrum. Now, the energy companies would like to add another device to the radiation load… and this one can’t be turned off. (read below for what I do to lower our families radiation load).
2- Invasion of Privacy: The energy companies do not need our permission (in NY) to install a smart meter on our homes. How can this be? The device gathers data for reporting, enables two-way communication, and does so on an hourly basis. Isn’t that an invasion of privacy? While I am a huge believer in reducing my families’ dependency on carbon, oil, and electric resources, an energy company should not have the right to monitor my home without my permission.
3-Other countries have much lower thresholds for RF radiation exposure than the U.S.: The quantity used to measure how much RF energy is actually absorbed in a body is called the specific absorption rate (SAR). According to Health Physics Society, a standing human adult can absorb RF energy at a maximum rate when the frequency of the RF radiation is in the range of about 80 and 100 MHz, meaning that the whole-body SAR is at a maximum under these conditions. Biological effects that result from heating of tissue by RF energy are often referred to as “thermal” effects. It has been known for many years that exposure to very high levels of RF radiation can be harmful due to the ability of RF energy to rapidly heat biological tissue. This is the principle by which microwave ovens cook food.
So there are set measurements for ADULTS but there are no measurements that have been set for children, pregnant women, or those with pacemakers. Isn’t that concerning? Any why are the thresholds lower in other countries? Are those populations “sturdier” than America’s people? And what happens now that we are constantly being bombarded by wireless devices that all function at that 80-100mz? Is there a compound effect?
As you can see, I have a lot of concerns. I am involved with a non-profit health organization called Grassroots Environmental Education,(port washingotn, NY) and they have launched a new consumer awareness campaign designed to inform Long Island residents about the rollout of wireless utility meters, so-called “smart meters,” and the potential impacts of this additional exposure to wireless radiation on human health. Their new social media and online campaign is based around emerging science linking exposure to wireless radiation with significant human health problems, particularly for unborn children, people with implanted medical devices and other sensitive populations. Here’s what the founders of this group have to say. Make sure to watch their simple, truly educational video about smart meters. I think you will feel as motivated asIi did to spread the word abut the negative health consequences of smart meters.
“Researchers are beginning to understand the association between exposure to wireless radiation and serious human health impacts,” says Patricia Wood, Executive Director of Grassroots. “The cumulative levels of radiation from wireless devices are beginning to reach alarming levels, and smart meters just add to that burden. Residents of Long Island should have the right to opt-out if they don’t want a smart meter placed on their home.”
What to do:
1- Watch this video: www.Opt-OutLongIsland.com, features a short video about smart meters, links to scientific information and contains sample letters that can be submitted by homeowners to utility companies requesting to opt-out from the smart meter program.
2-Shut down wireless devices: in the evenings, before you tuck in for the night, turn off your wireless devices. I simply unplug the router so it goes in to yellow mode (the light flashes yellow). In the morning I plug it back in and wireless is up and running again.
3- Use a corded phone. Cordless phones use RF radiation. No reason to always keep this attached to your face.
4-Use an earpiece and keep your cell phone off your body. There is no reason to wear your cell phone. 6 inches is the recommended distance from your body. (think backpack, handbag, on your desk in front of you, on your dashboard). They make cell phone cases that deflect radiation but where exactly is the radiation deflected to? Im not a huge fan and I truly believe your best bet is to use an earpiece or use speakerphone whenever possible. (and keep the phone off of you!!!)
5- Write a letter: If your neighborhood is part of the pilot program for smart meters, and you do not wish to participate, write a letter to your utility provider and let know. here is a sample letter: http://grassrootsinfo.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/samplesmartmeterletter.pdf
Technology is what allows so much good to happen in the world. I do believe we need to stay on top of our body burden from the constant bombardment of wireless RF energy. These are simple steps list above but it is a start.
Be radiant, not radiated!
