As with most people, my time is really limited and it’s an occasional debate for me wether I spend the occasional “free” hour I do have, exercising or getting my hair blown out. Recently, my 13 year old daughter has gotten really into the idea of blowouts. I understand! I love blowouts -and I love the way they help me feel put together physically for a couple of days- but obviously the effects are fleeting. So I just had to ask. Why would I choose exercise over a blowout? And what can I possibly say to convince my 13 year old that a pilates’ workout is a better use of her time than an hour at the hair salon? Jackie Dragone, of flexstuidos.com, talks us through this intense dilemma 🙂 xo, Michelle
All woman want to look and feel beautiful, it is a part of who we are. The problem, is that our idea of beauty has become unreachable and one based on what we see everyday in the media. Beauty goes much deeper than what you see in front of you! This is why, when I was asked the question, “Why is a Pilates workout better than a Blow Out?” I was so excited to answer it!
As a woman, I love getting pampered, and getting my hair done is high on the list of favorites. Admittedly, I feel great afterwards. But…what I have come to realize is that this type of superficial beauty will only last a day or 2 at the most. The new shiny feeling of a fresh blow out quickly wears away.
Don’t you want a type of beauty that doesn’t wash down the drain? Let’s find a beautiful YOU just as you are, with out having to do all kinds of “superficial” things to yourself first? As I am entering my early 30’s I have realized more than ever that this IS possible and it comes from a good diet and regular exercise. These two things keep me healthy and strong and, in turn, I feel beautiful as I am.
Here are the Top 5 Reasons That I would choose a pilates workout over a blowout, any day!
1.) Pilates Makes You Lean and Fit
The most common reason that people exercise of course it to be lean and fit! This is a great benefit to exercise and externally like a blow out, will make you feel beautiful. Unlike a blowout, a one hour pilates class will actually work your muscles and get your blood pumping. When starting an exercise regime, remember all bodies are different: Don’t compare yourself to other and focus on making your own body its own personal best. Also unlike a blowout, the great thing about this fit feeling is that if you keep it up, the physical results will not wash away in the shower, so for years to come you will feel beautiful being you!
2.) Pilates Improves Your Mood.
When you work out you will experience a natural high due to the endorphins your body will release. These are neurotransmitters in the brain that single your brain to be happy! Now who doesn’t want that?!! According to the American College of Sports Medicine, a 2006 study showed higher levels of sport participation and physical activity were linked to lower levels of depression, and that exercise can encourage better self-perception. For young women, what could be more important? Wether a young woman yourself, or a mom, aunt, or friend: help young women find that “natural high” that comes from working your body.
3.) Pilates Makes You Feel Clear Mentally
Due to the fact that Pilates take a lot of concentration for both your body and your mind, your focus will improve and your stress level will plummet. There are studies proving exercise is excellent medicine for mental wellness. This is connected to the point above, but what stands out about this, is that being a young woman can be complex and confusing. We love that something so simple as a concentrated pilates workout can clear a girls mind and help you /her apply this clarity to school work, reading, communication or anything else that takes deep concentration.
4.) Exercise Builds Your Strength, Which Applies To ALL Areas of Life
Feeling strong and powerful brings your confidence to the surface and confidence is BEAUTIFUL! You can use the strength you feel from exercise and apply it to things that may not being go as planned in your personal life. If you can find strength in one place then you can find it to get through a tough situation too. Being a teen girl is filled with very significant trials and tribulations. Physical AND mental strength are required to get through a school day, social anxieties, peer and parental pressures (could pilates teach our girls to be strong with their voices?), and long nights of studying.
5.) Pilates Can Save You MONEY on Skin and Hair Products.
As much as we all love a blowout, it is superficial beauty that we are spending money on to appear a certain way. If you exercise and eat right you will save on all of the latest beauty crazes. You will naturally have healthy glowing skin, shiny healthy hair, and a lean physique that looks great in all clothing. So when faced with the decision to spend time and money on a blow out or on a Pilates class—- hands down take the class! Save the blowouts for the special-est of occasions and instead indulge in 3-4x weekly pilates class or workout video. Stay tuned for DiGG’s very own Mat Pilates workout. You will LOVE the natural results!
Keep up a Pilates routine and the benefits will last forever. Sweat your way to your most beautiful self.
