Have you heard of the plastic stew in the Pacific Ocean? In case you haven’t, its a massive spiral–or gyre– of tiny plastic pieces that has accumulated in the ocean, thousands of miles wide and thousands of miles deep. A few years ago, I thought, “lets just clean it up with some massive drag nets”…. well, sadly, there is no way to clean up this stew and the 6 other stews that exist in the oceans around the world. The pieces are so small (nurdles) and they spiral so deeply…
But, we can do something about our over use of plastic. A few years ago, I became involved with creating a film about plastic water bottles and the HUGE terrible effect they have on our health and environment. Tapped is fantastic and has now circled the world and been seen my many school children, college campuses and people in all walks of life. It can be rented on Netflix or bought through the website, TappedtheMovie.com.
Check it out and then share with us your tips as to how to reduce plastic consumption in your own life. (my 2 personal best tips: no more giving plastic gifts to kids AND a reusable water bottle as often as possible!)
