Are there benefits to fluoride, or is it bad for you?
On January 28th, Crest unveiled it’s latest breakthrough product, chocolate flavored kids fluoride toothpaste. Us moms (and dads) all know that toothpaste labels clearly read “If ingested, call your local poison control center right away.” So, if sodium fluoride is not safe to be ingested, why would companies flavor kids toothpaste in such a tempting way?
For over a century, America has defended its use of fluoride as a means to prevent tooth decay. Today, most major U.S. municipal water supplies are treated with sodium fluoride, our dentists use it routinely, and pediatricians prescribe our children special vitamins containing this chemical.
I can assure you, that the more you research the history and background of sodium fluoride, the less likely you would want to use this dangerous toxin.
My Fluoride Story
When I was young, I never understood why my parents wouldn’t allow my sisters and I to have fluoride treatments during our dentist visits. As kids, we always felt uncomfortable when our dentist would belittle my parents’ decision and repeatedly tell us that one day “wake up with mouths FULL of decay.” Well, Mr. Dentist. That never happened.
Fast forward 30 years and I now share the same stand on fluoride as my parents did. Today, I am very grateful that my parents spoke up against a practice that was driven by the agricultural, pharmaceutical, and hazardous materials companies. The question is, why are hazmat and agricultural corporations behind the use of fluoride?
The Brief History of Fluoride
In the early 1900’s, a dentist in Colorado found that a certain town in his area had lower tooth decay than other areas, which he believed had to do with high levels of fluoride in the water supply. Fluoride is a waste by-product of agricultural fertilizers aluminum and phosphate, so these chemicals are commonly found in water supplies.
With this discovery, the fertilizer industry had found it’s new gem. Backed by a massive nationwide marketing campaign (without any long-term studies), the fertilizer industry was able to convince the American public that sodium fluoride was a groundbreaking treatment for tooth decay and therefore belonged in the public water supplies.
By the 1950’s, most of our water had been fluoridated and the agricultural and hazmat industries were doing cartwheels with joy. Before, agricultural companies had to pay to discard hazardous waste (fluoride) and now found they could actually sell it to pharmaceutical and water companies for a profit! GROSS business tactics!
Why We Should Care: Other than America, most nations do NOT fluoridate their entire countries’ water supply. Studies show that there is no difference in oral health in countries that fluoridate vs those who do not. Scarily, when long-term studies are run, over-fluoridation is shown to lower IQ in children, cause bone weakness, lower thyroid activity, damage kidneys, cancer, poisoning, and the list goes on. Still not convinced? Grab a box of rat poison on your next trip to the grocery store and look at the ingredients. The active ingredient? Sodium fluoride.
The issue is, we are not given a choice as to whether we want to ingest this chemical in our water supply. Infants, young children and the elderly (our most vulnerable populations) are forced to consume this chemical at the same rates as everyone else. Over a long period of time, the build-up of fluoride significantly adds to our Body Burden*.
What to Do: You can start to help yourself and your family reduce fluoride intake:
Take Action: At a personal level, it is important to take steps to reduce your fluoride levels. By lowering your Body Burden*, your body will thank you. You can also take action by signing up at the Fluoride Action Network. This not-for-profit makes it easy to donate, stay engaged and aware AND join a community of people who care. Also, there are some thoughtful petitions to sign which will help end mass fluoridation of our public water supplies. I also love the website Grassrootsinfo.org for fact sheets, radio interviews, and brochures around this topic.
It gets me fired up that decisions are made for our health, without the appropriate studies and without informed consent. Just like our right to know if there are cancerous chemicals in cosmetics and GMO’s in our Food, we deserve know when a pesticide or toxin gets added into our water supply.
Flavoring kids fluoride toothpaste like chocolate is the icing on the cake. Ingesting sodium fluoride is extremely dangerous and what these companies are doing is wrong. DreamInGreenGirl wants YOU to fight for your rights! 🙂 Stay informed and be free!
