Are there chemicals in sunscreen that may be more harmful to us than the suns’ rays themselves? We are learning that this seems to be the case: sunscreen companies use cheap, harmful ingredients to block UVB rays and while this protects us from a burn, it subjects us to nasty toxins that add to our body burden. Grrrr… Why are they allowed to do this? This is always the question that gets us DiGG girls fired up!!! They are allowed to because no one is regulating the personal product industry and since sunscreen doesn’t kill a person upon first application, it is deemed “safe” to sell to the general population.
To sunscreen or not? This seems to be the hot question! We don’t think its healthy to get burned but we also don’t like the idea of poisoning the largest organ in our bodies (our skin) with the toxic, body-burdening chemicals in sunscreen. The chemicals being used in sunscreens are found to be hormone and endocrine disruptors (like we need more things making our bodies go through changes???) as well as carcinogens. Waaaah.
So, while we love a good tan as much as the next girl, we are determined to make good sun choices. Here are 8 tips for how we stay safe in the sunshine:
This recent bout of sunshine has us boppin’ around town with giant smiles on our faces and our Jackie O glasses in full effect. And yes, we are as happy as the next girl to see a little color on our cheeks and a specklin’ of freckles on our noses. In only a few more weeks we will be poolside with our lemon waters and itsy bitsy bikinis! BUT, we are going to make sure to keep our body burden low and to AVOID those harmful ingredients like OXYBENZONE AND PABA. Regularly use zinc and titanium dioxide instead and make smart sunshine choices.
Here’s to safe bronzing!
