When you first make the commitment to healthy living, it is exciting to find new food products that shake up your everyday diet. For me, cacao is one of these “shakers”. It adds a bit of surprise and interest to any smoothie or raw food dish. It gives me a boost of energy and feels like a small indulgence as I rock my way through my healthy day. Mixed with frozen bananas, a tsp of chia seeds, spinach greens, and coconut milk and almond butter, I get my 5x/week breakfast smoothie that jumpstarts my morning. Try it, you won’t be disappointed! xo, Michelle

Cocoa?! Cacao?! I am sure you may be confused.
COCOA: this is the ‘chocolate’ you are probably most familiar with. Cocoa is the name used to describe the chocolate bars, cakes and biscuits we see in the supermarkets. It is a mixture of fat, sweeteners, preservatives and the tiniest bit of cacao. So small, that it has hardly any nutritional value.
So what is RAW CACAO? Cacao is chocolate at its’ rawest and unprocessed form. It is a superfood that has over 300 chemicals which greatly benefit our health. It can be used in our morning smoothies, energy balls, or in a homemade chia pudding, just to name a couple.
Here are 7 awesome benefits of RAW CACAO:
1- Helps balance blood sugar!
Cacao contains a vital mineral named Chromium which helps maintain blood sugar. Imagine eating chocolate which lowers blood sugar levels?!
2- Cacao makes us happy!
Cacao contains those all important neurotransmitters that make us feel amazing. A few of the highest chemical properties are anandamind & dopamine which are associated with the feeling of bliss and pleasure!
3- Decreases cholesterol!
Containing sitosterol, cacao reduces the amount of LDL cholesterol in our blood streams. LDL cholesterol is the bad cholesterol that can cause a range of cardiac diseases!
4-Aids the absorption of nutrients & vitamins!
In addition to lowering blood pressure, theobromine also promotes the absorption of vitamins, nutrients and minerals that are present in our food.
The high levels of iron in cacao helps give us energy as well as enhance cognitive processes.

Cacao contains theobromine, an all important ingredient for naturally lowering blood pressure!

Tryptophan, an amino acid found in cacao is converted into serotonin & melatonin in the body. These hormones help to control the sleep wake cycle as well as raising our happiness levels. A bite or two of raw chocolate per day could help you catch up with those essential zzzzz’s!
